Conversational Commerce Takes a Leap: Instacart Embeds Full Checkout Inside ChatGPT

Instacart has introduced a new way to shop by launching a fully embedded checkout experience inside ChatGPT using the emerging Agentic Commerce Protocol. It’s the first deployment that allows users to move from a simple question to a completed grocery order—all without leaving the conversation window.

Eliminating the “Handoff” Problem

Traditional conversational commerce has always hit a roadblock: AI could recommend products, but the actual transaction required switching apps or opening a new website. This interruption often led to users abandoning their cart entirely.

Instacart’s integration changes that. Users can plan meals conversationally, have carts automatically generated using local inventory, and check out directly in the chat using a Stripe-powered payment flow.

According to Nick Turley, Head of ChatGPT, the goal is to connect AI suggestions with real-world action in a single seamless interaction.

Built With Deep Operational Input

This isn’t a simple API plug-in. Instacart contributed early feedback to OpenAI’s Operator research preview, helping refine the agentic capabilities needed to operate in messy, real-world shopping environments.

With tens of thousands of SKUs and constantly changing store inventories, Instacart’s data ecosystem served as a proving ground for how AI agents should interact with fulfillment systems.

Instacart reduces the risk of AI hallucinations by grounding responses in a dataset spanning billions of product instances across 100,000 stores.

CTO Anirban Kundu notes that powering shopping inside an AI agent demands systems that can interpret hyper-local and highly dynamic inventory signals—something Instacart has spent years perfecting.

A Dual Strategy: AI for Customers and AI for Development

While the embedded checkout experience is consumer-facing, Instacart is also deploying generative AI internally.

The company uses ChatGPT Enterprise to accelerate workflow efficiency and OpenAI’s Codex to support internal coding automation. The combination reflects a broader shift toward AI-driven operations—improving both front-end user experience and back-end development speed.

Rethinking Digital Storefronts

Instacart’s approach signals a shift in how brands think about online presence. Instead of relying solely on their own apps or websites, the company is positioning its infrastructure as the fulfillment engine behind major AI platforms like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

As consumer entry points continue to fragment, embedding services where users already spend their time becomes a competitive advantage.

How Users Can Access the Experience

The Instacart app is now available directly in ChatGPT on desktop and mobile web, with native mobile app support rolling out soon. To activate it, users simply invoke the Instacart app in conversation—for example:

“Instacart, help me shop for apple pie ingredients.”

Account linking remains optional and consent-based, ensuring responsible data governance.
