Amazon Expands Autonomous Drone Delivery Across the US

Amazon is preparing to significantly expand its Prime Air drone delivery service, with plans to bring autonomous deliveries to nearly 500 cities and towns across the US.

The expansion would increase Prime Air’s footprint to roughly six times its current size, potentially making drone delivery available to tens of millions of additional customers.

Autonomous systems handle flight decisions

Scaling drone delivery across hundreds of communities requires more than simply adding aircraft. Amazon’s Prime Air drones rely on highly autonomous flight software designed to navigate safely without requiring a remote pilot to monitor every flight.

At the centre of the system is a Detect-and-Avoid capability that continuously evaluates the drone’s surroundings. The technology allows aircraft to identify obstacles and make flight decisions in real time without intervention from a remote operator.

Cameras and onboard sensors are responsible for navigation, obstacle detection, and the delivery process. Amazon says the cameras are not used to track individuals or record their movements, with captured imagery processed by the drone rather than transmitted as a live video feed for human monitoring.

FAA certification supports wider deployment

Prime Air operates under FAA Part 135 certification, the regulatory framework used for commercial air carriers.

Amazon describes the certification as the highest level of FAA oversight available to a drone delivery operation. It allows the company to expand into additional metropolitan areas without requiring a separate waiver for every location.

The drones are also designed to respond to unexpected conditions. Amazon says its safety systems can guide an aircraft toward a safe landing during severe weather or other emergencies, with the objective of protecting people, pets, and property.

Prime Air aircraft are designed to operate in everyday conditions, including light rain and varying temperatures, and use fully electric propulsion.

Designed for residential delivery

Noise is another consideration as Amazon moves drone delivery closer to residential areas.

Amazon says the sound produced during a delivery is lower than that of an idling delivery truck and lasts approximately 30 seconds. At cruising altitude, the company compares the sound to a window fan operating on a low setting and says it is generally inaudible indoors.

What can Prime Air deliver?

Prime Air currently focuses on relatively small packages weighing up to five pounds, or approximately 2.27 kilograms, and fitting within a large shoebox.

Amazon says that weight limit covers more than 60 percent of the products customers most frequently purchase on its platform.

The eligible selection includes millions of products at standard Amazon prices, ranging from groceries and cosmetics to medications and electronics. Examples include iPhones, Samsung Galaxy smartphones, Apple AirTags and AirPods, Ring doorbells, and other household products.

Deliveries can arrive within 30 minutes

Prime Air is designed for ultrafast delivery, with Amazon saying some orders can arrive in as little as 30 minutes. The typical delivery time is closer to an hour after checkout.

Pricing depends on Prime membership and order value. Prime customers receive free drone delivery on qualifying orders of $50 or more, while smaller Prime orders carry a $2.99 fee. Customers without Prime pay $4.99 regardless of order size.

Customers establish a delivery location when placing their first drone order. That location can then be reused or changed for future deliveries.

Before releasing a package, the drone scans the designated area for potential obstacles such as people, animals, and vehicles.

However, the technology is not infallible. A recent incident highlighted the challenge when a Prime Air drone released a package over a customer’s swimming pool rather than the intended delivery location.

Drones are one part of Amazon’s delivery network

Amazon is positioning Prime Air as an additional layer of its broader logistics system rather than a replacement for existing delivery services.

Amazon Now provides delivery in as little as 30 minutes in dozens of US cities, focusing on groceries, household products, and locally relevant items from smaller fulfillment locations.

The company’s Same-Day Delivery network provides one- and three-hour delivery for more than 90,000 products, while the broader Same-Day network covers millions of products across more than 10,000 cities and towns.

Prime Air is intended to fill a different role, particularly in suburban areas where drones can operate from Amazon facilities and provide rapid delivery without relying on traditional ground transportation.

Prime Air’s growing footprint

Amazon currently has 11 Prime Air locations serving 10 metropolitan areas across seven states.

Its existing network includes locations around Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Baton Rouge, Detroit, Omaha, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, and Waco. Each site covers approximately 175 square miles.

Amazon says its Prime Air facilities have recorded the highest average delivery volumes among US drone operations, with thousands of deliveries taking place each day and hundreds of thousands of packages already delivered by drone this year.

Expansion to new cities

Amazon plans to launch Prime Air in several additional metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Syracuse, Cleveland, Atlanta, and Boise, with more communities expected to follow.

Availability will still depend on individual ZIP codes, meaning that not every address within an eligible ZIP code will necessarily qualify for drone delivery.

The technology has also expanded beyond the US. Amazon’s Prime Air facility in Darlington, UK, is the company’s first operation outside the country and provides an opportunity to operate its autonomous flight and Detect-and-Avoid technology under a different aviation regulator.

The next stage of autonomous logistics

Amazon’s planned expansion represents a significant test for autonomous delivery technology.

Moving from a limited number of locations to hundreds of cities requires autonomous systems to operate reliably across different environments, weather conditions, obstacles, and residential settings.

If Amazon can scale Prime Air while maintaining safety and reliability, autonomous drones could become an increasingly important layer of last-mile logistics, particularly for small packages where speed is more valuable than the capacity of traditional delivery vehicles.
