Gatik Secures $200 Million to Expand Driverless Freight Operations

Gatik has raised $200 million in Series D funding as the autonomous trucking company looks to accelerate the expansion of its driverless freight network across North America.

The funding round was led by Qatar Investment Authority and Koch Disruptive Technologies, with participation from Millennium Management, ARK Invest, Intact Private Capital and other investors. Gatik says it now has more than $600 million in contracted revenue and has completed 85,000 fully driverless orders.

The company currently operates autonomous trucks in Texas, Arizona, Arkansas and Canada, moving goods between distribution centres and retail locations. It plans to grow its fleet from dozens of vehicles to thousands over the coming years.

Moving Beyond Fixed Freight Routes

Gatik’s autonomous driving technology was initially developed around relatively simple and predictable routes. Its early deployment with Canadian retailer Loblaw involved five vehicles operating along five predetermined routes between fixed pickup and delivery locations.

That approach has since evolved.

Gatik now operates dynamic freight networks where routes can include numerous pickup and drop-off locations. PepsiCo has said the company’s technology can adjust routes by adding or removing stops based on changes in demand and activity at distribution centres.

The shift is important because autonomous freight does not necessarily need to replace traditional trucking across every type of journey. Gatik has instead focused on the middle-mile segment, where goods travel between warehouses, distribution centres and retail locations.

Major Retail and Consumer Partnerships

PepsiCo has become one of Gatik’s major commercial customers.

The companies signed a multi-year agreement covering autonomous freight operations across Texas, Arizona and Arkansas. The deployment includes 41 fully driverless box trucks transporting Frito-Lay products between distribution centres and stores in Dallas, Phoenix and northwest Arkansas.

Gatik has also continued expanding its relationship with Loblaw in Canada.

The companies signed a five-year agreement covering an initial fleet of 50 autonomous trucks serving Loblaw’s distribution network in the Greater Toronto Area. The vehicles are expected to support more than 300 stores, with the operation transitioning from safety-driver-supported routes toward fully driverless freight transportation.

The relationship dates back to 2020, when Gatik and Loblaw began autonomous deliveries. By 2022, the companies had removed the safety driver from commercial routes. Before that transition, they had completed more than 150,000 autonomous deliveries with a safety driver onboard.

AI Simulation Reduces Dependence on Road Testing

Gatik is also investing heavily in simulation and synthetic data to improve its autonomous driving technology.

The company developed an internal simulation platform called Arena, which is designed to recreate driving environments without relying entirely on physical road testing. The system can generate synthetic scenarios for both routine driving situations and rare or potentially dangerous events.

That allows engineers to repeatedly test situations that may be difficult to encounter frequently in the real world.

Arena uses Nvidia Cosmos world foundation models to generate synthetic driving environments for training and validation. Gatik can vary environmental conditions and repeatedly expose its autonomous systems to scenarios that occur relatively infrequently during normal commercial operations.

Nvidia Hardware Powers the Trucks

Gatik’s autonomous vehicles also rely on Nvidia computing technology.

Nvidia said Gatik was integrating its DRIVE AGX platform into Class 6 and Class 7 autonomous trucks. The onboard system processes real-time sensor data and runs the AI workloads required by the autonomous driving system.

The relationship extends beyond computing hardware.

Isuzu Motors invested $30 million in Gatik as part of a partnership focused on developing Level 4 autonomous commercial vehicles for the North American market. The companies are working on a redundant chassis intended to provide a recovery mechanism if the autonomous driving software encounters a defect.

The companies are targeting mass production of the jointly developed chassis as part of their broader autonomous commercial vehicle strategy.

Level 4 Autonomy Targets Middle-Mile Logistics

Gatik’s trucks are classified as Level 4 autonomous vehicles.

At Level 4, an automated driving system can perform the driving task without human intervention when operating within the conditions for which it has been designed and validated. Those restrictions are generally described through an Operational Design Domain, or ODD, covering factors such as roads, geography and environmental conditions.

Gatik’s latest-generation trucks operate on highways and surface streets and are designed to run around the clock. The company says its vehicles can operate in conditions including light rain and snow.

The company’s focus on defined commercial networks could give autonomous trucking a practical path to scale. Rather than attempting to automate every possible driving scenario, Gatik is concentrating on repeatable freight routes where businesses have consistent transportation needs.

Scaling Toward a Larger Autonomous Fleet

Gatik says it plans to use its new funding to expand commercial operations, increase the size of its fleet and continue investing in its technology, infrastructure and workforce. The company is targeting more than 100 driverless trucks as it moves toward larger-scale deployment.

The company’s strategy illustrates how autonomous trucking is increasingly moving from controlled pilot programs toward commercial freight networks.

With major customers including PepsiCo and Loblaw, partnerships with manufacturers such as Isuzu, and AI systems supported by simulation and Nvidia computing, Gatik is positioning its middle-mile model as a scalable application for autonomous vehicles.

If the company can continue expanding its driverless fleet while maintaining reliable delivery performance, autonomous trucking could become an increasingly important component of regional supply chains.
